How to Launch a Private Label Makhana Brand
By Aamir Raza (Mr Makhana) · 4 October 2026

Step-by-step guide to launching your own makhana brand with a private-label partner: positioning, flavours, packaging, compliance and launch.
Why private label makhana?
Private label lets you sell makhana under your own brand without building a processing unit. Your partner sources, roasts, flavours and packs; you focus on brand, distribution and customers. For retailers, D2C founders, gyms, cafés and gifting companies, it is one of the fastest ways to bring a distinctive product to market.
Step 1: Define your positioning
Decide who you are for. A premium gifting brand needs different grades and packaging from a value-focused family snack. Think about your price point, your customer, where you will sell and what will make you stand out — flavour, origin story, design or format.
Step 2: Choose your range
Most brands start with a short range: a classic salted variant plus one or two bolder flavours. Popular directions include Himalayan salt, peri peri, cheese and herbs, and sweet coatings. Custom flavour development is possible, but a focused launch range is easier to perfect and to sell.

Step 3: Packaging and design
Choose pouch size, material, finish and closure. Your design should communicate the product instantly on shelf and on screen. Leave space for mandatory label information — ingredients, nutrition information, allergens, net weight, batch details and licence numbers as required in your market.
Step 4: Compliance and labelling
Labels must comply with the food regulations of every market you sell into. In India that means FSSAI labelling rules; other countries have their own. Never put health or nutrition claims on a pack unless they are permitted and substantiated. A good partner will share specification data so your label is accurate.
Step 5: Samples, approval and first run
Review samples of each flavour in the final packaging. Approve artwork carefully. Agree minimum quantities, lead times and payment terms in writing. A modest first production run lets you learn from real customers before scaling.
Step 6: Launch and learn
Launch where your customers already are — your store, marketplace listings, social channels or partner retailers. Collect feedback on flavour, crunch and packaging, and refine your range for the next run.
