How to buy makhana wholesale: grades, sizes, packaging, samples, quotations and the questions to ask a makhana supplier before you order.

Who buys makhana wholesale?

Wholesale makhana buyers range from neighbourhood grocery chains and modern retail to cafés, caterers, snack brands that flavour and repack, gifting companies and importers who serve entire regions. Each buyer needs something slightly different, so a good supplier starts by understanding your use rather than pushing a single product.

Understand grades and sizes

Makhana is graded mainly by the size of the popped kernel, with whiteness and wholeness also mattering. Larger, whiter pieces command premium prices and suit retail packs and gifting. Mid-size grades are popular for flavoured snacks, and smaller or mixed grades can work for cooking, food service and manufacturing. Ask your supplier to define each grade they offer in writing.

Raw, roasted or flavoured?

Decide what form you need. Raw (plain popped) makhana gives you flexibility to roast and season yourself. Roasted makhana is ready to sell as a plain snack. Flavoured makhana is finished retail product. Private-label buyers often want flavoured makhana in their own packaging — see our private-label guide for that route.

Packaging that protects crunch

Moisture is makhana’s enemy, so packaging matters as much as the product. For bulk supply, discuss inner liners, carton strength and how many kilograms each carton holds. For retail, discuss pouch material, barrier properties, zip closures and nitrogen flushing where appropriate. Confirm shelf-life expectations with your supplier based on the specific packaging used.

Questions to ask any makhana supplier

Before you commit, ask:

  • Which grades do you supply and how is each one defined?
  • Can I receive samples of the exact grade I will order?
  • What packaging formats are available for bulk and retail?
  • What is the minimum order quantity for my requirement?
  • What documents are provided (for example FSSAI licence details and test reports where applicable)?
  • What are the lead times and payment terms?
  • How are quality complaints handled?

Always get a written quotation

Makhana prices change with the crop, the grade and the volume, so be cautious with anyone quoting a fixed price without knowing your requirement. A proper quotation should list product, grade, pack size, quantity, unit price, currency, delivery terms and validity. At Munch Misty every quotation is prepared individually and reviewed before it is sent; we never assume freight, duties or taxes in advance.

Plan for consistency

For a retailer, the worst outcome is a great first batch followed by an inconsistent second one. Agree on grade specifications, keep reference samples and discuss how the supplier maintains consistency across batches and seasons. A regular, forecasted order pattern also helps your supplier plan.
