Exporting Makhana from India: A Practical Guide for Importers
By Aamir Raza (Mr Makhana) · 5 October 2026

What importers should know when sourcing makhana from India: documentation, packaging, Incoterms, samples and planning a first shipment.
Why importers are looking at makhana
Makhana has moved from a regional Indian staple to a snack recognised in many international markets. Importers serving Indian diaspora communities were early buyers, and today mainstream health-food and snack retailers are adding fox nuts too. For an importer, that means both an established core demand and room to grow.
Start with your market’s rules
Every destination has its own food import regulations, labelling requirements and possibly testing requirements. Before placing an order, check with your local food authority or customs broker what is needed for dried seeds and snack products. A reliable exporter will help with the documents they are responsible for, but the importer usually knows their own market best.
Documents commonly discussed
Exact documents depend on the destination and the agreed terms, but conversations typically cover:
- Commercial invoice and packing list
- Certificate of origin, where required
- Phytosanitary or health documentation, where required by the destination
- Product specification and, where applicable, laboratory test reports
- Exporter registration and food business licence details

Choose your Incoterms deliberately
Incoterms decide who pays for and manages each stage of the journey. EXW and FOB leave more of the shipping to you; CIF and similar terms put more on the exporter. There is no universally right answer — it depends on your freight relationships and how much control you want. Whatever you choose, make sure it is written into the quotation.
Packaging for long journeys
Export shipments may spend weeks in transit through changing temperatures and humidity. Discuss moisture barriers, inner liners, carton strength, palletisation and labelling for your market. If you plan to repack locally, bulk cartons may suit you; if you want shelf-ready goods, retail packs with your market’s label requirements are the way to go.
Samples before scale
Always evaluate samples of the exact grade and packaging you intend to buy. Check size, colour, crunch and taste, and keep reference samples for comparison when the shipment arrives. A small first order can be a sensible way to test the relationship before committing to larger volumes.

Makhana prices vary with season, grade and volume, and import duties and taxes depend on your country. At Munch Misty we do not assume duties or taxes in advance; your quotation clearly separates what we are quoting and what remains to be confirmed.
